This is probably what we were anticipating for long. First the direct involvement and backing of the much hyped Motorola Droid on Verizon network and now we hear Google is planning its own handset running Android. Tell you what; I have been waiting for this story. Things are definitely going to change in smart phone world.

The news first broke on The Street and then Telegraph backed it up. Google is in talks with HTC to manufacture a phone that would carry the Google brand. What other name than ‘gPhone’? The best part about the plan is that Google wants the phone to be available openly in market rather than sticking to some particular Telcos. Industry experts believe this would create a “shift in the balance of power between handset makers and telecoms providers”. While Google would deliver on its promise to deliver low cost and open standard mobile internet devices at the same time it would bring down the monopoly of telecom careers who keep a strong hold over the apps allowed on the handsets.

So the attack of the androids continues on mobile market. There are other handsets in the pipeline with Samsung and Dell in the run too. The gPhone, if it actually materializes, is supposed to run on Qualcom cores. Windows Mobile 6.5 did not make waves and the reviews are not very inviting. It is a good time for Android OS to capture the market.
